The practical answer
A useful sign survey makes the source of every fact visible. It records what was measured, what was supplied, what remains unknown and what has to be resolved before the work can move safely forward.
Before the visit
Turn a vague request into a survey brief.
A survey starts before anyone travels. Put the sold or requested scope beside the questions that still need an answer: location, elevation, substrate, power, access, dates and who can decide on site.
Do not use a site visit to make silent assumptions. Mark each field as confirmed, observed, customer-supplied or still unknown so the estimator can price uncertainty openly.

At the site
Capture observations that the next person can use.
Measurements, photos and notes only help when they remain attached to the same job and describe what they show. Include a reference point in each photo; record units and whether a measurement is approximate, supplied or measured.
This is workflow guidance, not structural, electrical, traffic-management or safety advice. Obtain the relevant competent assessment, permits and specialist input where the job requires them.
After the visit
Convert the visit into decisions, not a photo dump.
Reconcile the survey against the brief within a defined review window. Raise discrepancies as priced variations or questions before artwork or procurement begins. A clean survey hand-off lets artwork show the intended position and lets installation plan from known constraints.
